Q: Who were
your guitar influences ?
BH: When I first picked up the guitar I learned a few Bob
Dylan & Neil Young tunes and then started learning licks
off of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck & Allman Brothers
albums. I got into jazz guitar when I heard Wes Montgomery, Grant
Green & Kenny Burrell. I then checked out a lot of other
players, some of my favourite guitarists are: Charlie Christian,
Jim Hall, Joe Pass, Ed Bickert, Pat Martino, George Benson and
Pat Metheny.
Q: What guitar oriented CD's are
among your favourites ?
BH: That's a tough one because I have a large collection
of CD's and vinyl and tend to be pretty erratic in what I listen
to but...(in no particular order)
- Joe Pass "Virtuoso"
- Jim Hall "Live"
- Wes Montgomery "Full House"
- Pat Metheny "Still Life Talking"
- Miles Davis "In a Silent Way" (with John McLaughlin)
- Stanley Turrentine "Salt Song" (with guitarist Eric
Gale)
- Grant Green "Best Of"
- John Abercrombie "Timeless"
- George Benson "Bad Benson"
- Anouar Brahem "Barzakh" (oudist)
- Charlie Christian "Solo Flight"
- Jeff Beck "Blow By Blow"
- Jimi Hendrix "Electric Ladyland" Q:
What kind of Strings & Picks do you use ?
BH: I use D'Addario Chromes, Jazz Light Gague, .011-.050
Flatwound on the ES-175, D'Addario Pro-Arte Hard Tension Classical
Strings on the Takamine EN 60C and Ernie Ball regular slinky
(.010-.046) on the Stratocaster & Godin LGXT.
I use Fender Extra Heavy picks. Q: What kind of amp and effects do
you use ?
BH:
In the studio I run my ES-175 through a Digitech 2101 Artist
pre-amp (no effects) and run the outputs of that into the power
amp inputs of a Peavey Stereo Chorous w/ Black Widow speakers.
I usually mic the cabinet with a Neuman U-87 and a Shure SM-57.
The Neuman usually ends up working the best. I also take a direct
signal to tape as well and sometimes mic the guitar acoustically
and mix a bit of that in. We add reverb, compression & sometimes
delay in the mixing process.
Live, I currently run the guitars through a Korg A3 multi-effects
unit, into a Mackie 1202 mixer and out of that into the power
amps of a Peavey Stereo Chorous or Roland JC-120. I also trigger
a Roland JV-1080 synth module from a GR-09 guitar synth. The
1080 runs into a stereo pair on the Mackie 1202. Both the A3
and 1080 are controlled by volume pedals so I can blend in synth
melody doubles with the guitar sound. I also use a Boss OC-2
Octave pedal on a few tunes like "Soul Fruit" &
"StringBean". Q: When will you be touring in my
area ?
BH:
We try to get out on the road as much as possible but frankly
it is not as much as I would like. Playing live is my favourite
thing and I wish we could tour more often. Check out the website
www.brianhughes.com for tour updates or drop us an
e-mail at brian@brianhughes.com (see below for link) and we'll
add you to the e-mail list and inform you of all the upcoming
gigs. Q: Why are your first two CD's "Between
Dusk and Dreaming" and "Under One Sky" so hard
to find in CD stores?
BH:
My first two CD's were recorded for the Justin Time label in
Montreal,Canada. Unfortunately they have been unable to maintain
proper distribution, particularly in the USA. The CD's are not
discontinued as some catalogues suggest and you can always mail
order them right here by going to the orders desk.
